Give textures using Gesso and a Tutorial!
Hello lovely ladies!!
A very good day to you all!! Saumya has set an interesting challenge this month - Nail it down with textures.. At first I felt, it was out of my comfort zone. And believe me I had super fun!! This time not only the challenge, I even wanted to try projects different from my usual style. So , I tried all pastels and shabby chics.. Guys, gimme ur feedback, should I try more of this style? or do you want to stop me at this ;)
Ok, coming to the main topic of discussion, Each one of our DT members will be discussing about each texturing mediums in market. And I am looking forward to it,like you all are :). I am here to talk about Gesso and texture paste.
Had been experimenting with Gesso, for the past few days and I think, I had learnt a little.Feel free to leave a comment, if u have any doubts. Will get back to u as soon as I can.
What is Gesso?
Gesso is basically a primer used by artists. They are mixture of binders, chalk powder and white pigments. They are used in the base preparation,to smoothen surfaces, before an artist begins his work.
With the invent of mixed media canvases in scrapbooks, gesso has become one of the inevitable items for it.
What is Texture paste?
Texture pastes/Modelling pastes/Molding pastes are used to create stronger or more defined shape than is possible with Gesso.Thin coat of them, can also be used to prime surfaces.Their composition is similar to gesso , except that it has more plasters.
Gesso | Texture Paste |
Applying a layer of gesso is like a plaster | Texture paste is thick, with more sculptured effect. |
Cannot embed anything in Gesso | Can embed items with Pastes |
Since they are made of chalk, they do not resist paints or inks.Instead absorb them and show lighter color. Here are some of the techniques possible with Gesso.
1.Gesso with the stencil
2.Stamping with Gesso
3.Stamping/Stenciling on Gesso
4.Using Acrylic paints, distress inks, distress stains, Distress paints on Gesso
5. Mixing gesso with water based colors to get the desired color gesso
I made a shadow box frame and tried the first 4 techniques. Here is how the frame looks like.

Tutorial:
While playing with gesso , I stumbled upon this technique. It was super fun experimenting. Dont have a name for this tech.
Supplies used
Glassy paper
Darice Embossing folder
Sakura Gesso
Lindy's Mist
Sanding block
Take a glassy paper and emboss it using embossing folder.
Apply a thin coat of Gesso using Brush. Remember it should be thin. If you give a thick layer, the mists create a different texture on top of this paper. :)
Spray Lindys Mist over the paper and let it dry. Man!! I love that glimmer!
Now take a sanding block or nail filer and sand over the surface. The top layer of gesso gets removed and shows the glassy paper underneath.
The finished card looks like this :) But my camera is not brilliant enough to capture the shimmer on the cardstock or may be I am not! :P. Looks beautiful in reality!
I found this blog, that shared so many ways to create textures using Gesso and paste. Saved it for my future experimentations.. Now sharing it with you all.
